Baby Grace Arrives
May 6, 2009
Baby Grace Arrives...5 weeks early!
Grace Ellen Chan was born on April 24, 2009 at 6:24 AM. She weighed 4 lbs and 14 oz and measured 16 inches. She spent a week in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to get stronger. Mrs. Chan is grateful for all the love that was shown during that time.
Mrs. Chan is very disappointed she didn't properly say goodbye to her students. She misses all of them very much and will be sure to visit as the school year ends. Mrs. Graham will be taking over the last two months of school. She is a wonderful and talented teacher. Mrs. Chan's second graders are in very good hands!

Service Project
April 22, 2009

Service: Taking time out of your own life to make someone else’s better.
Mr. Gordon has issued a school-wide challenge and the second graders in Mrs. Chan’s class are not going to disappoint!
The Challenge: Spend 6 hours doing some kind of project where you are SERVING others.
Then what?: Make sure you take pictures of yourself doing the project and write down descriptions of what you did (document your time) and when you did it all.
After that?: Design a poster that creatively shows and teaches the rest of us what you did to help others. This poster should be colorful, neat and organized. It must have a title, your name, pictures (either photographs or drawings), written or typed descriptions of what you did, and the date(s) on which you did your project. You will be presenting your poster in class.
When is it due?: Friday, May 22, 2009

"Warriors for Change" Student Project
January 12, 2009
On January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama will become our 44th President of the United States, the first ever of
African American descent. So many things have changed since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke to the crowd in
Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963 over 45 years ago. So many people have stepped up to be warriors for change in our
country. It is because of these people's heroic efforts that our classroom is a rich diverse family.
Choose ONE of the following heroes to research and report on:
• Frederick Douglass (Father of the Civil Rights Movement)

• Booker T. Washington (The Great Educator)

• John F. Kennedy (35th US President)

• Thurgood Marshall (judge)

• Barack Hussein Obama (frst African American president of the U.S.)

Once you have chosen your “warrior hero”, research this person to find out as much as you can about him. You may do a report web to help you organize the information (we'll go over this in class). Then write a one-page report (IN YOUR OWN WORDS) about this person's life. Be sure to include how this person stood up for what he believed in and helped to change our country.
Next, you will gather 3-5 small “holdable” things in a box or bag that you will take out and use to help
you tell the story of that person's life in class. You may decorate the box or bag if you like. You should practice your
speech with the items in hand. Organize them and know what you're going to talk about frst. For example, if you find out
your hero really loved basketball when he was growing up, you could put in a small toy basketball to help you remember to
talk about that part of his life.
You will be presenting your Warriors For Change hero boxes/bags and turning in your written reports on Friday,
January 23, 2009. That's two and a half weeks away, so get to work now. Enjoy!

First Week of School
August 18, 2008
Routines

The first week of school is an important week. Students will be learning the routines and expectations of the classroom. Learning these procedures and appropriate behaviors is very important for a successful school year. While we set up routines at school, it is just important to set up a routine for homework, snacks, and playtime at home.
Please make sure your child is establishing routines at home that will lead to success at school. One important thing is to make sure your child is getting enough sleep. Because your child is growing it is recommended they get 9 to 10 hours of sleep. Other suggestions might be to limit the amount of televison and gaming time they have. Encourage active play where they will move and use their imagination.
A good learning experience is built on a cooperative effort between parents, student and teacher. With your participation we can look forward to a productive, creative and fun year together! Looking forward to meeting all of you!
